Exploring the Burmese Language: A Window to Myanmar’s Rich Heritage

Mention the words ‘Burmese’ or ‘Burma’ outside of Asia, and you might get responses about cats, colonial stories, or perhaps confusion. Beyond these associations, however, lies something far more significant: Burmese is the official language of Myanmar, spoken by over 30 million people—about two-thirds of the country’s population. Meanwhile, ‘Burma’ is the country’s former name from the British colonial era, officially changed to Myanmar in 1989.

Historical Background

Myanmar is home to four major language families: Sino-Tibetan, Tai-Kadai, Austro-Asiatic, and Indo-European. Burmese itself is a key member of the Sino-Tibetan family, second only to the various Chinese dialects. This expansive language family includes more than 250 languages spoken across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and parts of South Asia.

The Bamar people, who primarily reside in Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River basin, speak Burmese as their mother tongue. Given their strong adherence to Theravada Buddhism, Burmese vocabulary is rich in Buddhist terms. Moreover, the language is widely used among Myanmar’s diverse ethnic minority communities.

Burmese Today

Although primarily centered in Myanmar, Burmese also has speakers in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Despite its regional significance, it hasn’t spread extensively internationally, unlike languages such as Thai. Nevertheless, approximately 32 million people speak it as their first language, with around 10 million more using it as a second language.

Interestingly, although widely known as ‘Burmese,’ the language is officially recognized as the Myanmar language by the country’s government and regulated by the Myanmar Language Commission.
