Thai is a language different to almost any other. Five tonal registers. Five linguistic registers. No punctuation or spaces between words. But as the second-largest economy in South-East Asia, with a thriving export industry and huge tourist trade, Thailand is a market which companies across the world want to do business with.

Asian Absolute will help you tap that market with the ease of a local. Our expert Thai translation and interpreting services will assist you and your UK company in building your local relationships. You’ll give a huge boost to your ability to do business in Thailand, as well as work in line with local cultural preferences and styles.

Why choose Asian Absolute?

Guinness World Records

What you need to know about the Thai language

The Thai language (also known as Siamese) is completely different to most other systems of communication on the face of the Earth. For example:

  1. Thai has no punctuation, no upper and lower cases, no gender, no article, no plural, no conjugation, no spaces between the words… and, most confusingly of all, technically no alphabet!
  2. The Thai language has a syllabic alphabet(called an abugida) of 44 consonants and 15 basic vowels
  3. Thai has five tonal registers– mid, low, high, rising and falling

The challenges involved in Thai translation – linguistic registers

As well as tonal registers, one of the most important things to come to terms with when having your documents translated to or from Thai are the linguistic registers. There are five of these, with three of them being part of the national curriculum (and thus understood by almost all of the population):

  • Street or common Thai
  • Elegant or formal Thai
  • Rhetorical Thai
  • Religious Thai
  • Royal Thai

Some of these are only appropriate in certain circumstances (you would only use Royal Thai when addressing a member of the royal family, for example). But using the correct register in the correct social situation or when writing is vital to communicating in this language.
