Are Hindi and Urdu the same language?

While Urdu is very similar to Hindi when spoken – the grammar is essentially the same – when written, the languages are completely different. Urdu is written from right to left, while Hindi is written left to right. Hindi uses Sanskrit vocabulary, while Urdu mainly relies on Persian and Arabic.

Despite this, Hindi and Urdu are technically considered registers of the same language, Hindustani (sometimes referred to as Hindi-Urdu). The differences between the two are sometimes described as sociolinguistic and the dialects of both languages said to be on a spectrum between those which are more Persianised and those which are more Sanskritised.

However, it is important to note that due to significant religious and regional differences, actual speakers of Hindi and Urdu will tend to argue that they are two distinct languages. This makes carefully distinguishing between the two a matter of showing a clear commitment to any region or community.

This is something which Asian Absolute is ideally positioned to help you with.

Coverage of all Urdu dialects

Urdu is the national language of Pakistan and also has official status in several Indian states – Jammu and Kashmir, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The language also has several dialects – Dakhni, Rekhta, and Modern Vernacular Urdu among them.

Whichever Urdu-speaking region you are targeting, Asian Absolute will use native linguists to make sure your message truly connects with your local audience. Part of this will involve tailoring the level of formality in your message – a key part of communicating in Urdu.

We do the same for all of our Urdu to English projects too. No matter whether you are targeting the UK, the US or any other English-speaking region.
